Chronology of the United States Dime
The United States Dime received its start in 1796. It was at that time the Draped Bust Dime was minted. That coin was produced from 1796 to 1807, then there was a two year hiatus between the production of the Draped Bust Dime and its successor the Capped Bust Dime. This series ran from 1809 to 1837, after which time the Liberty Seated Dime came into existence. The Liberty Seated Dime was produced from 1837 to 1891. Next came the Barber Dime, also known as the Liberty Head Dime. This coin was minted from 1892 to 1916. The next coin off the ranks was the Winged Liberty Head Dime, commonly known as the Mercury Head Dime (1916 to 1945). The Roosevelt Dime is last and current, coming into circulation in 1946 and existing in silver coinage form until 1964 after which time the business strike was clad.
