Chronology of the United States Nickel Five Cent Piece
The Nickel Five Cent Piece came to life in the United States in 1866. The first coin to come out of the Mint in 1866 was the Shield Nickel. The coin was produced until 1883. Also in 1883 the Liberty Head Nickel came into existence. The Liberty Head Nickel was produced from 1883 to 1913. The next five cent piece was the Indian Head Nickel (aka the Buffalo Nickel), which was produced from 1913 to 1938. The latest in the series, the Jefferson Nickel, was put into circulation in 1938 and remains the current nickel today.
